ASUS Eee PC X101 runs MeeGo, costs only $200 (video hands-on!)

ASUS is starting off its bevy of Computex announcements with the new Eee PC X101, a netbook that gives the 11-inch MacBook Air a run for its ultrathin money — with a 950g weight and 17.6mm thickness — while running either Windows 7 or… wait for it, Meego! The latter model will come out at the groundbreaking price of just $200.

It hasn’t been exactly smooth sailing for MeeGo, Intel’s Linux-based operating system that was developed to go up against offerings from Google and Apple. But there have been signs of life here at Computex 2011, beginning with Asus’s launch of the EeePC X101. And now there’s the Lenovo Ideapad S100, which was spotted in the wild running a version of MeeGo that’s actually usable. Let’s take a closer look.

Acer unveils its Iconia Tab M500, a Meego tablet powered by an Intel Atom chip

Taiwanese hardware maker Acer barged in on Intel’s press conference at Computex today to unveil a 10in Meego tablet running an Atom processor.

The Iconia Tab M500 appears to sport a similar chassis to the firm’s A500, which comes with Android Honeycomb, and has been designed to offer a user experience similar to “fast food”, according to Acer associate VP David Lee.

Demoing the unit in front of another tablet-hungry audience here in Taipei, Lee said that “people are looking for a snacking experience that they can use anytime or anywhere”.

During last week’s MeeGo conference a demo area gave companies a chance to show off some of their MeeGo related products and solutions. We’ve collected together a number of video demos, captured by those attending the conference, to give you a flavour of what was available. The demos include MeeGo 1.2 Developer Edition for the N900, iBuddie MeeGo Tablet, MeeGo TV UX, Indizmixx 2 portable studio MeeGo tablet, BasyKom’s UI concept, Intel AppUp running on MeeGo devices and a Dance Dance Revolution style game written in QML.

MeeGo Conference 2011 Wrap-Up

As one of the organizers for the conference, I might be a little biased, but I had an absolutely fantastic time at the second MeeGo Conference held May 21 – 25 in San Francisco. Like with many conferences, it was the people who made it such a great experience for me. Interesting conversations with new and old friends combined with fun activities and sessions full of geeky material made for a fantastic experience. Despite getting almost no sleep thanks to some very late nights of werewolf and discussions in the hacker lounge, it was worth it!

ASUS Eee PC X101 – MeeGo powered netbook

At the Computex trade-show, ASUS has launched a new netbook, the Eee PC X101, which uses the MeeGo OS as its default operating system. The X101 has a 10 inch screen, weighs around 950g and is just 17.6mm thick. It uses an Intel Atom N435 processor running at 1.33 Ghz and is available in a range of colours and configurations, with pricing starting from around $200.

Understanding MeeGo

Disclaimer: I’m a software developer with a background in Nokia’s Maemo mobile Linux ecosystem. I’ve built both software and community services for it. As a Maemo enthusiast, I’ve also been following MeeGo with interest, and am helping to build some of the project infrastructure there as well. But I do not speak with the authority of the MeeGo project, and what is written below is my personal view into what MeeGo is.

After the recent San Francisco MeeGo Conference there has been surprisingly much negative reporting about MeeGo, mostly centered at Nokia’s MeeGo story. While Nokia’s strategy changes are unfortunate, much of the reporting around it appears to come from misunderstanding what MeeGo is about.

Many see MeeGo just as Android without Java, but it is much more, as I’ll explain here.

Acer Iconia M500 – MeeGo tablet shown at Computex

Earlier today, at the Computex trade-show, Acer unveiled the Iconia M500, a tablet running on MeeGo. It has 10 inch screen, with a resolution of 1280 x 800, and runs on an Intel Atom processor (Moorestown). The device is running a custom UI, which is described as ‘snackable’, on top of MeeGo 1.2. Acer expect to release the M500 to the market by the end of the year, but have not disclosed pricing details.

The Mseries is a new line for Acer and is set to be the standard designation for their MeeGo tablet products. The appearance and dimensions of the Iconia M500 are similar to Acer’s Android tablet, the A500.

MeeGo and GENIVI are on a roll

Since I wrote regarding GENIVI’s selection of MeeGo in Aug of 2010, there have been many upgrades to both GENIVI and MeeGo IVI. For GENIVI, a much more lightweight working model eliminated one layer of organizational structure (councils) and reduced the number of working groups by half, while still covering the important topics. The restructuring occurred in Oct 2010, and has led to significant improvements in contribution by members. Lessons from the open source environment have been applied, enabling the serious leaders, OEM and Tier1, to drive the work and keep previous sideliners commenting through mailing lists. By cutting back on the live conference calls, there are far fewer moments of silence.
